At #TheHiddenHarmProject, we expose a hidden crisis within intimate relationships, family environments, medical and psychiatric systems: the widespread failure to recognise trauma from domestic abuse, coercive control, and relational harm as the root cause of distress. Instead of addressing the deep wounds of abuse, too many survivors are labelled with psychiatric disorders and subjected to voluntarily or forced medications that can compound their suffering rather than heal it.

Why The Coercive Control Foundation?

We are different because we put you at the centre — without the limitations of traditional systems.

  • We have no ties to pharmacy or clinical interventions.

Our approach is independent, holistic, and focused on empowerment rather than medical models. We will never push medication or clinical pathways as the only solution.

  • We believe you.

Your experiences, your truth, and your voice matter. We listen without judgement and validate what you have been through, especially when other services have let you down.

  • Work with a professional who has genuine lived experience.

Our support comes from people who have personally navigated complex trauma from childhood through to adulthood. This shared understanding creates real connection, trust, and practical insight that purely academic or clinical approaches often miss.

  • Advocacy, Emotional Support and Empowerment

We work alongside you to strengthen your voice, rebuild confidence, and support you to regain autonomy and self-control — essential skills when facing the coercion that exists in many systems and relationships. Our goal is to equip you with the knowledge, strategies, and confidence to recognise, challenge, and protect yourself from coercive control, both now and in the future.

The Hidden Harm

Domestic abuse and coercive control do not just leave emotional scars, they rewire the nervous system, shatter identity, and create complex responses that mimic many psychiatric conditions. Flashbacks, hypervigilance, dissociation, anxiety, depression, and emotional dysregulation are normal human responses to prolonged terror and betrayal, not inherent "mental illnesses" requiring lifelong chemical intervention.

Yet, the system often responds with rapid diagnoses and pharmaceutical solutions. Survivors find themselves on powerful medications with serious side effects, sometimes under legal compulsion, while the underlying trauma remains unaddressed. This path can lead to further disempowerment, loss of agency, and a deepening sense of hopelessness - which has the potential to bury in the nervous system and become unconscious. We believe this constitutes a form of institutional harm that silences victims and perpetuates cycles of control.
